The weaving centre of the Kalakshetra Foundation, housed since 1954 in a building on the Thiruvanmiyur campus built for its looms. It weaves silk, silk-cotton and cotton saris in the Kanchipuram tradition, using designs associated with Rukmini Devi; some designs are licensed to the state handloom directorate as Kalakshetra saris. Call ahead about retail timings before visiting.

Kanchipuram, the temple town about 75 km south-west of Chennai, is the best-known silk weaving centre in Tamil Nadu, and its sarees are widely regarded as the classic south Indian bridal silk.
