Started in 2003 in a small shop on Pondy Bazaar, Palam made its name with lightweight Kanchipuram silks that are easier to wear than heavy bridal pieces, generally in the Rs 10,000–30,000 range. It now has showrooms in T. Nagar, Mylapore (moved from Luz Church Road to Oliver Road) and Anna Nagar. Suited to buyers after modern colours rather than classic temple designs.

Kanchipuram, the temple town about 75 km south-west of Chennai, is the best-known silk weaving centre in Tamil Nadu, and its sarees are widely regarded as the classic south Indian bridal silk.
