Bhagalpur, on the southern bank of the Ganga in eastern Bihar, is India's best-known centre for tussar (tasar) silk weaving and is often called the 'Silk City'.
Murshidabad, in central West Bengal on the Bhagirathi river, was the capital of the Nawabs of Bengal in the eighteenth century and one of the principal silk-producing areas of India; its silk was exported widely through the East India Company.
